Meet a delegate: Justin Ellis

Justin Ellis, 27, is a veteran of the US Navy. He came to the summit as an American delegate from the University of Illinois.
He just took a workshop on gender and development. "It was applicable to a wide range of projects applicable to what people are doing here. When you change a population by providing a resource, you change the balance between different groups. And two of the most prominent groups are males and females. It is important to take into account these negative consequences.
Ellis found that the workshop resonated especially since he had very recently attended the V Day celebration at the Super Dome in New Orleans. "That event focuses on the effects of gender imbalance and patriarchy. This course was great becaue it shows how to do something constructive to fix the problem.
Asked what he is bringing to the summit, and what people can learn from his experience, Ellis, who is working on a project concentrated on community development and childcare in Guatemala, cites his age and experience. "In my time working with engineers without borders, I have worked on a range of projects. I have seen what has worked and what doesn't. I hate to just say experience, but I guess that's what it is."
