Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'

Filed Under:

...with deep gratitude to the King of Pop, and a grain of salt from the reader...

We've got more problems
Than we'll ever need
You got gang violence
And bloodshed on the street
You got homeless people
With no food to eat
With no clothes on their back
And no shoes for their feet

We've got drug addiction
In the minds of the weak
We've got so much corruption
Police brutality
We've got streetwalkers
Walkin' into darkness
Tell me
What are we doing
To try to stop this

I said you wanna be startin' somethin'
You got to be startin' somethin'

It's too high to get over (yeah, yeah)
Too low to get under (yeah, yeah)
You're stuck in the middle (yeah, yeah)
And the pain is thunder (yeah, yeah)

You love to pretend that you're good
When you're always up to no good

Ain't the pictures enough, why do you go through so much
To get the story you need, so you can bury me
You've got the people confused, you tell the stories you choose
You try to get me to lose the man I really am

The major ingredient of any recipe for fear is the unknown
And this person or thing is soon to be met

Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual
See, but everybody wants to believe all about it

Honey, come set me free
Don't you know now is the perfect time

No time for castles in space
Or livin' in make believe

If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change

Just take it slow
'Cause we got so far to go

So keep the faith
Don't let nobody turn you 'round
You gotta know when
It's good to go
To get your dreams
Up off the ground
Keep the faith, baby, yea
Because it's just
A matter of time
Before your confidence
Will win out
Believe in yourself
No matter what it's gon' take
You can be a winner
But you got to keep the faith
...Gon' keep it brother
You got it

Nothing good ever comes easy
All good things come in due time
Yes it does
You gotta have something to believe in
I'm telling you to open mind

Don’t stop til you get enough
Let that rhythm get into you
Don't try to fight it
There ain't nothin' that you can do

Nation to nation
All the world
Must come together
Face the problems
That we see
Then maybe somehow we can work it out

There'll be no more mountains for us to climb
We can touch the sky and light the darkest day

If they say -
Why, why, tell 'em that it's human nature

Inspiration to (worthwhile) procrastination

Posted by Mike Del Ponte at Jul 03, 2009 04:16 PM
This is the first time I've really thought about Michael Jackson's lyrics, and I have to say I'm impressed. As someone too young to really appreciate MJ's rise to fame and the effect he had on the world at the pinnacle of his success, I mostly know the King of Pop for his flashy outfits, hits like Thriller, and, of course, the dance moves. This post had me searching the internet to find out why MJ was so powerful. It led to 30+ minutes of youtube videos and google searches, but in retrospect, it was time well spent. Thanks for posting this.

Heal the world

While people are celebrating his life and his talent, few really see his incredible contribution as a human being. In addition to personally donating hundreds of million of dollars to date, Michael Jackson was listed in Guinness World Record countless times not only for his music/video career, also for his support of 39 charities, more than any other entertainer or individual. He founded his own *Heal The World Foundation* in 1992 and continuously led the foundation to helping children around the world. But only a handful of people have ever heard or read about this because the media didn’t want to report it. They just wanted breaking news, even if they had to twist the facts and instead create something else. His own words didn’t count, because it’s the media who got to decide what they wanted people to think of him to be. Even though he was found NOT guilty in court, some people still address him publicly as a criminal and NOBODY in the media stood up to set the record straight. For the media, it’s the profit. For the public, most people didn’t care enough to (or incapable of) filter the media’s feed to see the hidden truth.

The social good he has achieved was overshadowed by the artificial negatives arranged by the media. Does one man’s dignity matter? Is one man’s innocence important? Even if he could let go all of these, would it be fair for his children and his children’s children? If it were just an average Joe, what would we think?

Just by doing an honest and responsible reporting, the media could do way more good than it has been doing for the last few decades. I sincerely hope that day will come soon.

To understand who Michael Jackson really was and is, his lyrics say it all.
