GlobalGiving Index

by Social Edge last modified 2008-08-26 14:47

The GlobalGiving Index highlights what's hot (and what's not) in charity giving. It lists the top five funded projects (these projects that have received the most donations in the previous week), the average donation size for all GlobalGiving-supported projects, and the theme and geographic area that received the most donors.

Now in its second year, the GlobalGiving Index has been enhanced to better represent marketplace activity, seasonality, and major donations. Specifically, instead of using a single number as the average weekly donation for the entire year, we are now using a weekly metric.

The Index is now calculated as follows:

Current Week's Volume / (Same Month Last Year's Volume/Number of Days in the Month)x7

Example:

January 2006 Volume = $202,990.78

January 2007 Indexed Volume:
(($202,990.78 Total January Volume)/(31 days))*(7 days in week) = $45,836.63

Therefore for the week of  January 1-7, the GGI was 31. It was calculated as follows:
($14,359 (actual volume for the week)/$45,836.63 (indexed volume for the each week in January)*100 = 31 for the week

In addition, a second plot has been added to the graph in blue that shows the actual number of donations in that given week.

The GlobalGiving Index on Social Edge is a unique tool to help social entrepreneurs around the world monitor their progress, adapt their messaging or launch new social ventures. Visit GlobalGiving, where individual and institutional donors are directly connected to social and economic projects.
