Backyard Waste to Wealth Project for Low income earning countries

Posted by Kenneth Anchang Yongabi at January 15. 2009

The overall purpose of this project is to improve upon the production capacity of the a limited back yard  piece of land in a hihly poulation density bamenda, cameroon through an integrated backyard farm where the household waste is converted through appropriate bioconversion biotechnology to generate a multiplicity of products which in turn generates income and a cleaner environment for the rural and urban poor.Components include piggery and poultry farm whose wastes are anaerobically digested in a low cost plastic type digester to disinfect the waste from pathogens and generate biogas for cooking needs and solid sterile manure for croping backyard fruit and vegetable crops and liquid sterile  as nutrients for a small size fish pond to cultivate tilapia. The waste water from fish pond is used to irrigate the crops and moringa  trees which in turn can be used for green manuring and seeds used for domestic water purification.

We live in a time when the population is exponentially increasing ,especially in Subsaharan Africa, creating stiff competition for land with an unprecedented rise in poverty, disease and environmental decay. This has raised a lot of Global concerns.

The anticipated outcomes of this project are:

(1)             Improved productivity, fish, pork, vegetables, biogas, biofertiliser, crops, clean water, and clean and disease free homes.

(2)             Available food and variety

(3)             Improved income /revenue generated .(4)             Job creation

(5)             Utilisation of the waste from homes.

(6)             Pre-awaken interest in nature-type production systems.

(7)             Sustainable development. This is a project is an activity of the Phytobiotechnology Research Foundation and Clinic based in Bamenda with a unique  focus of promoting Green solutions and converting green technologies to wealth in the area of health ,Agriculture and Environment in an environment with an increasing craze for modern and high expensive technology from Western countries.Phytobiotechnology Foundation upholds that wealth can be generated insitu remeniscent of the ecology of that environment without unnecessary migration to the Northern hemisphere as witnessed today by most Youths from developing nations. That the community development approach and the birth of sustainable development instituted by Christ himself when he used a loaf of bread and five fishes to feed an amazing crowd and emphatically stressed on the collection of the crumbs which yielded twelve (12) baskets should be emulated.  In our Presbyteries we eat lavishly and generate crumbs of “24” baskets, yet, we through them away, and ironically pray that Christ should manufacture more for us.  The idea of the project therefore is to utilise wastes from one sector as a raw material in another.

Mankind should do more or produce more from what nature has offered rather than expecting more from nature.

Hello Kenneth,

Thank you for submitting your value proposition.  My name is Kyle Burgoon, and I am a member of the GSBI Applicant Mentoring team.  My role is to guide you through the application process, providing feedback and answering any questions you may have.

I have read your submission, and the impact of this project is evident.  You certainly make a compelling statement; now I want to encourage you to state the value of this mission more succinctly.

The Value Proposition is a brief statement, no more than three or four sentences, that concisely summarizes why your target beneficiaries will choose to partake of your service.  Consider it your brief response to the question "What does "Backyard Waste to Wealth do?"  For instance, suppose you meet someone who is interested in helping you expand your reach.  They ask you about your mission, and you can provide a response that piques their interest, drives conversation, and hopefully leads to a new professional relationship.

Here is a template for the Value Proposition, although I feel you should not restrict yourself to one sentence, but you should avoid more than four sentences:

[Name of organization] provides [products/services], which are [statement of key differentiators], for [target beneficiaries], and thereby creates [statement of social value/impact], unlike [competition].

And here's an example I like from Aravind Eye Care:

For the millions of people in India with cataract blindness, the Aravind Eye Care System profitability provides diagnosis, treatment, and post-operative care, which is 100% safe, has a greater than 90% chance of cure, is less than 1/5 of the cost of comparable care, and is free for those who cannot afford to pay. Unlike government run hospitals, Aravind provides high-quality cataract surgery in a professional and ethical manner, serving all patients with dignity. Unlike those who do not receive quality surgery, patients are able to return to productive lives.

Note that they give an idea of the size of their market (millions of people in India), include their name, and outline their mission (diagnosis, treatment, and post-operative care of cataract blindness).  They also outline the advantages of Aravind for their direct beneficiaries (safety, high probability of cure, and affordability).

Go ahead and prepare a new Value Proposition, and I'll review.  Once it's ready to go, we will submit to the Application Committee and move on to the next step of the application process.  Please feel free to post your revised Value Proposition to this thread.

I look forward to working with you.  Don't hesitate to forward any questions or concerns to me.

Regards,

Kyle

BACKYARD WASTE TO WEALTH PROJECT -Revised submission

Backyard waste to wealth project is a major Scheme floated by the Phytobiotechnology Research Foundation in Bamenda,Cameroon meant to improve the food production capacity and create self employment to more than 10 million Cameroonians who live below one dollar a day by processing their home waste to a multiplicity of Bye products with limited land resource.

The  population of most Subsahran countries is increasing at more than 48% per annum without a concommitant increase in food production.More  than 80% of our people live in Semi urban and rural areas and practised subsistence farming with stiff competition for limited land as well as high waste discharge from homes. The level of poverty remains intractable as the traditional  farming systems are too linear and with low productivity. In 2008 there sporadic civil unrest across many subsaharan african countries for Govrnments to intervene in lowering prices of Basic Commodities.Phytobiotechnology has a track record in Converting Domestic garbage,Pig and poultry waste raised at backyards to Highly mineralised Fertilisers that feeds unto a small tilapia fishpond and vegetable farm.Fied crops residues are used to cultivate high protein mushrooms with spent waste feed on to the animals. The production out puts is high with little inputs built on a highly integrated biosystems with simple and effective bioconversion technology leading to ZERO emission (NO WASTE)Waste that would ordinary be discarded is being converted to ,biofertiliser  and biogas using a simple plastic anaerobic digesters. The prodcts are fresh organically grown vegetables, spinach,Hukkleberry,Tomatoes etc, fruit tress, pawpaw, mangoes ,passion fruit, pine apple, etc, then meat from chicken and pig, fish, mushrooms and maize.and cheap cooking fuel in a clean environment.Increased yieds shall then be sold at a comparatively cheaper cost than what is obtainable at the local markets today.PRF envisages that 50% of the youths will have self employment,30% 0f  the elderly who cannot go miles to farm will farm at home as well as children .The possibility of export of organically grown crops is also envisaged if the production capacity increases  iand the concept is well replicated across Cameroon and beyond its borders.

ThanK you Kyle and your GSB Team for your  immense Support. It is an experience for a Scientist to try to speak the language of business and marketing.

Hello Kenneth,

Very well done.  I will submit this to our Admissions Team.  I cannot recall off-hand if I have given you feedback on Exercise 2 yet or not, but if I have not I will soon.

By the way, I really like your writing style.  Also, I believe scientists bring very good things to business and marketing.  I look forward to the rest of your app.
