Carpets for Communitities - Cambodia

Carpets for Communitities is an SE i started with some friends in 2004. We won an award for it and recently got some good media coverage (click on Australia).

We are looking for a manager for the project who has the characteristics of a social entrepreneur and can help us take it to the next level. The Manager will be responsible for operations, capacity building towards full localisation, marketing, staff management, rcruitment and training and program development. The manager will have the support of the 4 directors and some long term international volunteers.

A small stipend will be made available.


Program Manager

Carpets for Communities is an innovative social enterprise run with the joint legal support of Bangkok-based Millennium World Peace Foundation (MWPF) and the local Cambodian Hope Organization (CHO). Founded in 2004 by a group of Young Social Entrepreneurs is makes use of a business / ngo model and is an income generation and childrens education project. We address poverty at a root cause level to tackel the issues of womens empowerment, economic poverty, under education, child labour and child trafficking.

We target women of families with children who are foregoing school to support their families through work at home or on the Thai border (child labour or begging). Through this program, women of needy families are given carpet-making training, supplies, and a sales channel for finished products. The steady and secure source of income that the women receive provides much-needed, short-term financial support to their families and enables their children to return to school. We also run various small programs to strengthen the families and further empower the women and children such as health care and first aid training for the women, the provision of back to school kits for the children and micro-finance for the families.

The following is an outline of the responsibilities of the Program Manager. While many tasks are carried out by local staff, the project manager oversees all aspects of Carpets for Communities.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Program Management

• In collaboration with CfC stakeholders, create, implement and analyze annual budgets and program objectives, ensuring alignment with overall program goals
• Create and maintain program calendar, monitoring deadlines and milestones
• Write funding proposals and compile reports for donors
• Manage communications, including presentations, quarterly newsletters and website content
• Represent Carpets for Communities at meetings and forums
• Manage relationships with Cambodian and Thai government officials and other NGOs
• Manage program accounting, compile financial reports, and ensure financial transparency and accountability
• Lead monitoring and evaluation activities

People Management
• Manage a team of local staff, expat staff, and international volunteers
• Build capacity of local staff to take on management of various CfC aspects
• Recruit, hire and train new staff - Specifically a local Director to take on the running of the project

Product Management
• Refine product portfolio, with an emphasis on building product quality
• Research and develop new products that fit the CfC model and have international markets
• Source and import raw materials
• Manage cost and price models
• Assist with customer design translation to CfC staff and participants
• Optimize production efficiency

Marketing & Export Management
• Develop and implement program marketing plan
• Create and maintain marketing collateral
• Manage relationships with existing customers and establish new sales channels
• Manage on-time delivery of shipments
• Ensure compliance with customs regulations
• Coordinate export logistics and paperwork

Duration: 12 months minimum
Location: Poipet, Cambodia

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree preferred but relevant experience will be highly regarded
• A minimum of two years professional experience in a related field (development, business, fair trade, marketing, product development, etc)
• Prior experience living and working in a developing country
• Experience in successful implementation of a wide range of tasks
• Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people
• Effectiveness in working in a non-profit organization that is focused on high-quality work with low overhead
• Proven track record of achieving results
• Ability to multi-task
• Willingness to travel frequently with the region
