NewGlobe Schools
VP/Director Instruction, East Africa
NewGlobe Schools is breaking new ground with its approach to addressing the dire need for high-quality primary education across Sub Saharan Africa. With an innovative schooling model that will raise the bar for education across the region, NewGlobe Schools has the potential to change the lives of millions of families struggling to make their way out of poverty. This is a unique opportunity to join at the ground level a dynamic educational social venture.
NewGlobe Schools is launching a large-scale franchise of extremely low-cost for-profit primary schools to provide access to affordable high-quality education for poor families across Sub Saharan Africa. Our approach addresses the critical problems facing education systems in many countries in the region: the lack of accountability and absence of incentives for improving performance and educational outcomes. Because of NewGlobe’s innovative model, we are able to cost-effectively deliver high-quality education. By charging only $3 per student per month, NewGlobe schools are affordable to those living under dollar per day poverty, while enabling local franchise owners to open and operate profitable school businesses, and maintain a financially viable business model at the central franchise level. NewGlobe is launching its franchise beginning in Sub Saharan Africa in 2008 and plans to rapidly scale the organization to serve more than 1 million families across the region.
NewGlobe’s founding team is led by a seasoned entrepreneur with a proven track record of providing innovative educational solutions and rapidly building and scaling extremely successful organizations; an entrepreneurial business leader with experience applying new approaches and technologies in Africa; and an acclaimed anthropologist with substantial experience working on-the-ground with international development initiatives. We are at heart an education venture, and you will be the expert and leader guiding the organization across a wide range of educational issues that will be critical to our ability to build a franchise of high-quality but low-cost schools, and deliver:
• a world-class teacher training program and most importantly, a hands-on, ongoing teacher support system in the field that will enable us to hire local teachers with minimum secondary school education, without previous teacher certification, and provide them with the training, skills and support needed to be highly effective in our classrooms
• a robust continual assessment program for frequent evaluation, intervention and remediation of all of our franchise schools
• a direct instruction curriculum supported by instructional materials, teacher guides, remediation and training
• a data-driven, highly research-based approach to managing schools and allocating constrained resources (including conducting high-quality research on our franchise schools and identifying, interpreting and applying appropriate high-quality external research)
This is an IDEAL job for an entrepreneurial superstar with 5+ years of educational expertise, especially in teacher training, curriculum & instruction, assessment and school management, who wants to be part of a founding team, take on a tremendous responsibility and have a huge impact on the lives of millions.
You will become part of our small, elite management team that will entirely be based in Sub Saharan Africa. This job will require you to relocate for a minimum three-year commitment. Over time, you will lead the building and staffing of the department.
