TransFair is seeking a highly-skilled Chief Operating Officer (COO). This is an opportunity for a strong general manager to play a leading role in a growing organization that is poised to go to scale. Reporting to the President & CEO, the COO oversees key program-related activities and staff, including business development, product certification, marketing and category management. The COO is responsible for delivering on key impact and financial metrics, ensuring the efficacy of the business model, and optimizing service delivery to industry partners. The COO partners closely with the President & CEO on strategy, policy, and new business opportunities. The COO is responsible for enhancing the organization’s internal processes and communications, and for keeping the organization focused on key priorities and initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have a successful track record in operations management, cross-organizational integration, and high quality service delivery, preferably in the consumer packaged goods sector. We seek an innovative leader with exceptional interpersonal skills that can strengthen TransFair’s internal capacity and ability to accomplish its mission.

The Chief Operating Officer will assume program management responsibilities. It is anticipated that the addition of a strong COO will free the President & CEO to concentrate on strategic business development, external communications, fundraising and long-term strategy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

LEADERSHIP
• Use a positive, highly accessible, and open style of leadership that motivates staff to work hard and well together. Must be comfortable in a culture of change and have the ability to bring cohesion to a complex organization.
• Demonstrate a collegial and interactive partnership style in dealings with other members of the executive team;
• Provide clarity around roles and responsibilities of staff; develop consistent and rigorous standards for accountability and measurements of success.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND OPERATIONS
• Manage and optimize the earned revenue operating model, and delivery of certification services.
• Coordinate with other service providers involved in the development of global standards, procedures, metrics, and certification for Fair Trade products.
• Report regularly to the President & CEO on strategic issues and key business activities.

FISCAL MANAGEMENT AND OVERSIGHT
• Deliver on key earned revenue and service metrics.
• Collaborate with the CFO, President & CEO, and Board Finance Committee on annual budgeting and planning process.
• Work closely with the CFO to lead the organization in its relations with external partners including legal advisors, consultants, and third-party vendors. Participate in the negotiation of contracts to achieve the optimal outcome for the organization.

Qualifications    
• MBA or equivalent master’s degree required.
• Previous P & L responsibility.
• Evidence of success managing fast-growth organizations, with a particular emphasis on refining business models, organizational design, operational expertise, and services infrastructure for increased efficiency and scalability.
• Experience working with C-level decision makers and Board.
• Experience in the food/CPG/retail industry is preferred.
