Mercy Corps Phoenix Fund

Mercy Corps’ Constituency Development (CD) Team is a crucial component of the Resource Development Department. The Constituency Development team develops and enhances relationships with major donors and prospects ($5000+ annually) from the private sector (individuals, corporations, foundations, organizations and other). Private grants represent a vital source of ongoing support and targeted resources for Mercy Corps’ field programs.
The Director, Phoenix Fund creates and executes overall strategy to insure the success of the Phoenix Fund and also develops and enhances relationships with major donors ($10,000+) to raise resources to fully capitalize the Phoenix Fund.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Raise funds to generate donations of $1 million annually as a first step to achieving scale.
2. Convene and direct the volunteer Phoenix Fund Committee to issue proposal requests, make grant decisions, develop strategy and other activities.
3. Engage the Constituency Development team and Phoenix Fund Champions on pitching the Phoenix Fund to prospective donors.
4. Develop a revised Phoenix marketing strategy, utilizing portfolio results and seeking out and presenting at venues where Phoenix-qualified prospects gather, e.g. YPO, tech groups, social entrepreneur associations, etc.
5. Develop a strategy to move the Phoenix Fund to an increased level of engagement with volunteers and staff.
6. Create a viral marketing engine that has the ability to generate donations.
7. Communicate regularly with Program colleagues on goals and application process of Phoenix Fund, and provide technical assistance on grant application submissions.
8. Create quarterly reports from Phoenix Fund grantees (narrative, financial and photos)
9. Create and update Phoenix Fund marketing materials
10. Maintain Executive team’s high level of interest in the Phoenix Fund

As part of Mercy Corps’ agency-wide Organizational Learning Initiative, all team members are responsible for spending 5% of their work time in formal and/or non-formal professional learning activities.

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Vice President for Development

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
• Ten years experience in nonprofit or business preferred.
• Must be comfortable making “cold calls” and regularly following-up with prospects and professional advisors. Must also be able to set and meet targets for constituency development.
• Demonstrated success in donor cultivation and stewardship.
• Must be an accomplished presenter.
• Direct role in a nonprofit or business that has grown significantly in the recent past.
• The ability to think strategically when crafting high-leverage donor marketing programs and high-leverage Phoenix Fund programs.
• Knowledge of program design, budget and proposal preparation.
• Proven ability to build consensus and work with diverse opinions to develop program proposals that match PF criteria.
• Strong collaborative experience with colleagues and volunteers.
• Knowledge of market development, value chains, job creation.
