Business Volunteers to Support Social Entrepreneurs

Posted by Tal Dehtiar at October 16. 2007

Omar Yaqub, MBA Alumni from University of Alberta, worked as a MWB Volunteer in Nigeria to help fight malaria using his business skills.  Omar sacrificed a high paying job, a fancy car and took on more loans to volunteer and support an organization that produces PermaNet, a mosquito net that provides long lasting protection for up to 4 years. Omar used product placement (i.e. Marketing) in Nollywood (the world’s third biggest film industry) to generate publicity, help normalize use of the nets, promote the brand, and create positive associations with a stigmatized but highly beneficial product, mosquito nets. This was the first adult education campaign was used in Nollywood and reached millions of viewers across Nigeria and Africa. Omar was recently featured on Global National’s Everyday Hero for his work with MBAs Without Borders.

MBAs Without Borders is bringing innovative solutions to developing countries by matching experienced business volunteers from around the globe with local businesses and NGOs working in developing countries. To date, MWB has partnered over 30 MBAs with in 15 countries, has over 5,000 MBAs within its direct network, 30,000 monthly website visitors and links to 400 MBA communities. MWB partners with small businesses and NGOs in Africa, Central Asia, South-East Asia, South Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America (including Mexico) and the Caribbean, not only to develop businesses, but also people and nations!

Hello,
I want to start a fair trade, sustainable clothing company in West Africa. I am a designer and I have a good amount of experience in various aspects of business from production work to project management and marketing, but I do not have any real business skills and I do not have enough expertise in sustainable, ethical business in Africa. I am trying to gather a team of people together for the project to draw up a feasable plan and begin! Would you be interested in talking further?
My e-mail is homeagain@airxcess.net
Thank you
Heather
