Experienced executive and entrepreneur seeks opportunity to work with social ventures

Posted by Michael Pilato at April 29. 2008

I have recently come to the decision to pursue a different career path, a “second career” if you will that more seamlessly integrates my work with my personal values and growing interest in sustainable, socially responsible business.  My investigation led me here, which seemed to me a good place to deepen my knowledge in the area of social ventures and perhaps find a fit with one of the emerging businesses in the community.

I am currently a partner in a strategy consulting practice that specializes in global business development for technology companies.  Over the course of my career, I have successfully started and run new business enterprises both within large corporate structures and outside which includes more than 20 years of executive leadership experience building global brands. Through a combination of creativity, leadership, strategic marketing skills, and collaborative management style, I have delivered outstanding results; be it growth, profitability, product innovation, or business transformation in both emerging as well as mature businesses. My career includes extensive international business development experience, spanning more than twenty five years and five continents, so I am quite comfortable in the "global enterprise".

I would ultimately like to be involved with a social venture and would like to begin the transition perhaps by offering up my management expertise with early-stage companies. I am fully committed to the idea of “doing well by doing good” and in putting my experience and passion for new business ventures to work in creating a more prosperous and sustainable future.  I would be interested in connecting with social entrepreneurs for possible collaboration on existing projects and to explore more permanent possibilities.

My professional profile can be found on LinkedIn.

Sincerely,

Michael Pilato

Hey Michael, Great thing that you've re-discovered yourself. Getting off the rat race and heading for a more meaningful career cannot be a bad choice for anyone! Since I have a company that specializes in leadership, strategy and social entrepreneurship development (emphasis on the latter) I was positively surprised to see your offer. Why don't you check out my website www.feelovation.com to see if it catches your fancy (is that even an English expression?). Anywho, someone here in sunny North is waiting for you to be in touch... even if you'd want to be US-based we could work something out. At the moment I'm dealing with prisoners, youth and immigrants. And this is just the beginning. -Tomi

Dear Mr. Pilato,

I happened to browse through your posting and wish to introduce my company. I manufacture critical liquid pollution control equipments in India and sell in National and International Markets. This is a startup with strong global requirement and addresses key pollution causing liquids like Metal working fluids. I need somebody who can strategically take this forward to the global arena. I would like to invite you to my website www.puretechindia.com to know more on the company.

I look forward to knowing your interests on this.

Regards,

Hello Michael, I am a social entrpreneur specializing in education through thr media arts. My sister is my colleague. I left a career in law enforcement becasue I saw too many kids get shoveled into the criminal justice system because of developmental or educational difficiencies. (As oppose to those who really need to be in corrections to protect society) The foundation of our work is based upon early childhood development, alternative learning styles, perceptual difficulties and the need for active experiential learning. We have spent 10 years and most of our money in research and development. We now have an educational prevention program that was nomnated by the state of Wisconsin as its most promising prevention program for youth. (alcohol, drugs and violence) Now we need to impliment it. We are program developers and social innovators, sadly, not business experts. We do need help. Lately, we have discovered that worldwide enforcement and treatment have become big business, so prevention is not just a social issue, it's a threat to the status quo. What if prevention could become the new business model, just like "going green" is changing the way business schools are thinking? We don't know how to get to the next step. We are in talks with non-profit agencies in several states but we do need help with making this program pay for itself, yet that is exactly what local communitites need: a prevention program that can not simply "save" money, but generate new income so it can pay for itself. More information is on our website, including several published articles. www.taprootinc.com Thank you for any help you can offer. Sincerely, Linda Flanders

Michael, You may wish to look into this opportunity as a way to connect with and evaluate opportunities with social entrepreneur ventures:

"We are delighted to announce the launch of the LGT Venture Philanthropy Fellowship Program, which aims to provide local organizations in our portfolio with management support and capacity building expertise.  Starting from today, experienced business professionals wishing to share and implement their professional skills to create positive impact, can apply for a year of pro bono work with one of our portfolio organizations in either Africa, India or Latin America. The first group of fellows will start their fellowship year in January 2009 and spend up to a year with the local organization.   Applicants should have at least two to five years of relevant experience.  Click here for more information, and application forms.  The deadline for applications is 14th September 2008"

Hi Michael,

Looks like this post is a few months old, but in case you have not yet found a way to get your feet wet with social benefit organizations, I'd like to introduce myself and my business. Squarepeg llc connects people and organizations that share ideals and helps similar organizations collaborate to benefit the sector as a whole. It all revolves around individuals taking action. We're enabling people to coordinate messaging on multiple platforms from one place, using FB aps, open social, widgets, etc. Then we're using a recommender system (think amazon.com, netflix, or stubleupon) to help people sort through it all and find the opportunities and collaborators that are most likely to inspire them to action. We're launching a private beta in just a few weeks, you can read more about us at http://www.squarepegged.org

Right now it's a side project with a lot of energy and minimal funding. We were a netsquared featured project this last May. In the coming months we will look for more significant seed money and go full time once the other co-founder and I graduate from Lewis & Clark in Portland. If you're familiar with tech startups and consulting, working with us might be a great way to transition into social sector culture, and have an impact on a creative team that currently lacks the perspective of long experience.

Hope to hear from you, isaac [at] squarepegged [dot] org.
cheers
Isaac

Happy to be here. I am from Ghana and I am a writer/director. I run a production company and currently, my company has finished working on a screenplay and we need financial assistance to shoot the movie. The movie touches on the negative effects of military take overs in Africa and its social, economic and health impart on the people. For the last 5 weeks or so, i have searched the net looking for funding for the project but almost all the funding available for filmmaking are for only Americans or Europeans. There is virtually nothing for Africans who need funding most since our governments and organizations have no respect for the arts, apart from the fact that, the theme for the movie is a bit sensitive too. My kind request is, can you please link me to an individual or a company that will be interested in partnering with us to shoot the movie? It is absolutely going to be a business venture and a win win situation. We will send the screenplay to the prospective investor to read first. If the person likes the script, we take it from there. Thank You!
