Fundraising for K-12 social entrepreneurs

Posted by Anne Ginther at February 13. 2008

Imagine being a child who has a cool idea on how to help a worthy cause.   Could that kid really make an impact?  What if that child had a little support from grown-ups?  What if that child could hook up with other kids around the world who have the same goals?  A lot of "littles" can make something big.  Kids proved that: As reported on the ABC News Website ( http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/08/us_school_kids_.html )  Kids collectively raised over $10 Million dollars for hurricane relief and rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina!

Recently three elementary classrooms in the USA started their own bottled water businesses.  They created their own brand, marketing plan, and they sold the water.  In just six months these children together have funded a pump in rural South Africa--providing clean, safe water--for the first time--to 700 children and a surrounding community of 2500 people, and they hope to have another pump funded by the end of the school year.  NBC Nightly News highlighted them for "Making a Difference" (watch here:  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22425001/vp/22380927#22380927)   As you watch the personal story of a South African girl who has suffered from lack of water, think about the fact that there are 699 other kids at her school alone with a similar story.  And then think about the amazing feeling that each of the kids in the USA had (you'll see one of them at the ripe old age of nine, proud to be contributing to society)--knowing that they significantly helped this community.

All of these  children have something in common:  They were brought together by a 501C3 nonprofit organization called RandomKid (www.randomkid.org).  RandomKid believes in the "Power of ANYone."  Any RandomKid CAN change the world.  Through RandomKid, children have joined together to fight pediatric cancer, AIDS, and help individuals in their own communities.  They're building a school in Cambodia!  And so much more (see www.randomkid.org/impact.asp).

What is really neat about all of this, is that not only are people receiving the support that they need; but children are learning how to solve real world problems.  And once they've harnessed their power for the greater good, they are moved to continue to help.  We worked with one 10-year-old girl named "Tasha", who had the goal of eradicating homelessness.  We started her with helping furnish a Habitat for Humanity home.  We helped her get meetings with area leaders, and the next thing you know, Tasha had furnished the entire house!  We only later learned that Tasha herself lives in a small trailer with little of her own.  Tasha is now walking tall--initiating projects of her own to help others!

RandomKid is currently in the process of a website redesign that will allow us to harness technology to help many more children help many more people around the world.  We need financial support during this transitional time

We need to raise $12,000 in the next six weeks, and at least $100,000 this calendar year.

Please let me know if you can help us with fundraising, and/or spread the word to others who might be interested in investing in children.  Our goal is to help kids become innovative and successful world problem-solvers.  By doing this, we believe we are securing a better fate for our world now, and into the future.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

The formatting of my post pushed a lot of information down-- to the point that you may not have realized it was there... so here is that information:
