Design for the Other 90%
Filed Under:
May 4 through Sept. 23, 2007 - New York, NY
The exhibition highlights the growing trend among designers to develop solutions that address basic needs for the vast majority of the world’s population - 90 percent - not traditionally serviced by professional designers.
On view at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, New York, Design for the Other 90% features more than 30 works that demonstrate how design can be a dynamic force in transforming, and in many cases saving, lives.

Grant Competition: Buzz Cuts
Did you know that every 30 seconds a child dies of malaria? Did you also know that a $10 bed nets can save lives by preventing malaria-spreading mosquito bites? Many families in malaria-prone countries in Africa cannot afford these lifesaving bed nets. The Nothing But Nets campaign is raising money to send bed nets to Africa. A $10 bed net protects a family of four for up to four years.
The People Speak (TPS), Americans for Informed Democracy and Nothing But Nets are announcing Buzz Cuts, a project to harness the creative spirit of college students and to help students raise awareness and funds to support the global fight against malaria. College students will propose creative ideas of how to bring the Nothing But Nets campaign to raise money for bed nets to their campus.
TPS will select up to 10 winning ideas and provide a $500 mini-grant and training for the students to implement and document their campaigns. Each campus group will return to their school, conduct the campaign, and create a short film or video toolkit showing how others could replicate their campaign idea on another campus.
The 10 video toolkits will then be put up for a nationwide vote on The People Speak website for people to pick the most innovative and successful campaign. The winning team will receive a $500 prize. Campus groups can then apply for a $200 TPS mini-grant to bring the winning campaign to their campus. Up to 30 mini-grants will be made available.

Women’s Funding Network Annual Conference
Seattle, WA - April 26, 2007
Making Grants to Change the World
Seattle Sheraton Hotel and Tower, 1400 6th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98101
April 26, 2007
Come join the Women’s Funding Network to network with leaders of the non-profit world, discuss best practices and become a part of a social movement to create change. We don't take the traditional approach to grant making - or more importantly, to the way we help women across the world fight poverty, hunger and injustice. We believe it’s as basic as helping women help themselves. To learn more details, please click here.
