Unltd India's Third International Conference on Social Entrepreneurship

4th – 5th Dec 2008, Chennai, India

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the third International conference on Social Entrepreneurship in India, to be held from 4th – 5th Dec 2008 at Dakshinachitra, Chennai in India.

The conference, the third in the annual series, is being organised by UnLtd India. To briefly introduce UnLtd India, it exists to be a home for early-stage social entrepreneurs in India. It finds, funds and supports exceptional individuals to enable them to develop as leaders, start up sustainable, high-impact initiatives, and prepare their fledgling organisations for further funding and investment.

As part of its mission to promote and accelerate the development of social entrepreneurship in India, UnLtd India created a unique annual series of international conferences since 2006. The 2006 and 2007 events attracted up to 150 organisations and institutions like Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, Ashoka, Aavishkaar, Acumen Fund, Gram Vikas, Hewlett Packard, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Monitor Group, Nike, Schwab Foundation and Vision Spring. Speakers have included Paul Basil, Lisa Heydlauff, Dr. G.K. Jayaram, Joe Madiath,  Matthew Spacie, Vineet Rai, Anand Shah, Vishal Talreja and Stan Thekaekara.

The 2008 conference, to be held on 4th – 5th Dec, will attract 250 delegates comprising of social entrepreneurs, funders, NGOs, corporates and academic institutions focusing on social entrepreneurship. The main takeaways for the delegates will be:
·        Inspiration through talks by incredible leaders and budding changemakers from the sector
·        Information through panel discussions on burning issues in the sector
·        Opportunity through advisory panels where select delegates will pitch their ideas/project to experts and   leaders and get advise, feedback and suggestions.
·        Expertise through skill based workshops / trainings
·        Publicity through information areas where delegates can share their work
·        Connections through informal and formal networking sessions

The Modern Story Fellow

The Modern Story is a grassroots initiative that implements a self-designed digital storytelling curriculum and multimedia skill set in two governmental schools in Andhra Pradesh, India. The Modern Story is looking for fellows for its fellowship program which 1) introduces to, and then sustains progressive pedagogies and a creative multimedia curriculum in governmental schools in the greater Hyderabad region, and 2) offers undergraduates and young persons in the U.S., the opportunity to participate directly in volunteer work abroad within the field of education and technology. The fellowship takes place during two stints throughout the year: (July-September, and October-January).

Fellows will spend three months teaching a group of twenty four students at two schools 5 days a week. They will teach students to operate filmmaking equipment while encouraging creative expression and student centered learning around topics of social importance. The students will learn the process of digital storytelling or filmmaking in steps, and create a final product at the end of the three months to share with the wider world via a weblog. Travel and accommodation expenses will be provided for. Fellows will be expected to participate in fundraising strategies before, during or after their trip to India.

2nd Indian Cleantech Forum

The CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development (Confederation of Indian Industry) and Clean Technology AustralAsia have again partnered to organize the 2nd India Cleantech Forum.

Opportunity for rising social leaders in Colombia, Ecuador, India, and U.S.

Atlas Service Corps (Atlas Corps) is a new international social organization that seeks to create a global partnership for development, strengthen the social sector, empower leaders around the world based on mutual respect and exchange of ideas and to revolutionise the traditional models/flows of international cooperation.

We offer year-long fellowships for talented leaders from Colombia, Ecuador and India to volunteer at US non profits as well as for US leaders to serve in Colombian social organizations. We are currently looking for the best social leaders to apply.  Learn more about the benefits of becoming an Atlas Service Corps Fellow.

Atlas Service Corps is now accepting applications for the 2008-09 fellowship program. We encourage you to read the following information carefully to learn about eligibility and how to apply.

To apply:

All candidates MUST:
  • Be citizens of Colombia, Ecuador or India (for fellowships to the United States); or from the United States (for fellowships to Bogotá, Colombia).
  • Have 3-8 years of experience in the citizen sector of your home country.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree.
  • Speak, read and write English fluently. If volunteering in Colombia, you must speak, read and write Spanish fluently as well.
  • Be committed to your country and return home after the one-year fellowship program.
(Optional). Individuals may nominate candidates with the nomination form found here.

2. Candidates who meet the application criteria will be able to download the application form. If you do not have access to Microsoft Word, then you may email apply@atlascorps.org and request an online login and password.

The application must also include the following items:
(a) Send two to three reference letters to apply@atlascorps.org. Reference letters from relatives will NOT be considered. Click here to download the reference letter form.

If you have limited access to the Internet, a paper application may be filled out and mailed to the respective country office in Colombia, India or the United States. 3. Applications will be reviewed by a committee including citizen sector, government and business leaders from multiple countries. Two semi-finalists will be chosen for each fellowship position by the end of May.

4. Colombian and U.S. Host organizations will conduct phone interviews with the semi-finalists in May and early June. The Host organizations will make their final recommendations to Atlas Corps and Atlas Corps will notify the top choices by mid-June.

5. The selected overseas candidates will go to the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá or New Delhi, or visit their local Colombian Consulate in mid to late June for their J-1 / Special visa interviews. Selected U.S. candidates will go to the Colombian Embassy in late June for their visa appointment. If they receive their visas, then they will become Atlas Service Corps Fellows!

6. The fellowship begins with a ten-day orientation and training in August. The $500 Fellow deposit is due on the first day of Fellow orientation.

Indicorps 2008-2009 Fellowships

Applications are due March 31, 2008.

Indicorps is a non-profit organization that offers opportunities for aspiring young leaders of Indian-origin to engage in intense grassroots development projects through one or two-year public service fellowships. We are currently recruiting soon-to-be college graduates and professionals of Indian origin for our August 2008-2009 Fellowship.

Indicorps seeks to engage the most talented young Indians from around the world on the frontlines of India's most pressing challenges; in the process, we aim to nurture a new brand of socially conscious leaders with the character, knowledge, commitment, and vision to transform India and the world.

Why Now: We are currently recruiting soon-to-be college graduates and professionals of Indian origin for our August 2008-2009 Fellowship. There are over 50 exciting community-based projects ranging from educating tribal youth in Maharashtra to increasing production of natural dye based products in Karnataka.

Social-Impact Accepting Applications from India-based Social Entrepreneurs

Applications for two year-long professional development in Hyderabad, India due April 26, 2008

Social-Impact is pleased to announce that application materials and guidelines for its two year-long professional development in Hyderabad, India are now available through April 26 2008 at www.social-impact.org.

Social-Impact's professional development programme offers training, mentoring, networking opportunities, capacity building and access to financial support to help successful social entrepreneurs advance to the
next level in pursuit of their vision. These unique services are delivered and supported in collaboration with leading local, state and national practitioners and mentors.

New this year, Social-Impact will be accepting applications from social entrepreneurs who are based anywhere within India. Additionally, Social-Impact is extending its program to two years in length: Year one will focus on the fundamentals of business planning for scaling social enterprises. Year two will help selected participants with exceptional business plans gain access to new sources of funding as well as increasing existing sources in order to meet scaling goals.

Social-Impact's two-year programme requires a serious time commitment from selected social entrepreneurs, and ultimately enables them to successfully ramp up and scale their social ventures. Between 15 and 18 talented individuals will be selected to participate in the 2008/10 professional development programme in Hyderabad, India.

Social entrepreneurs interested in participating in the programme should download the guidelines and application. Space is limited and applications will be accepted on a rolling basis through April 26 2008.

Engineers for Social Impact Fellowship Program

Engineers for Social Impact is a unique fellowship program to connect the best engineering talent to the most credible social enterprises that drive market-based solutions to development in India.

In 2008, an eminent panel of judges will select 5 E4SI Fellows to gain from challenging immersion experiences in partner social enterprises. In addition, they will join a select cohort of outstanding young leaders committed to social impact and build valuable relationships with leaders in the development sector.

E4SI partner social enterprises (founded by alumni from schools such as Harvard, Wharton, INSEAD and IIT) are leaders in the sectors of Education, Energy, Health, Micro-finance and Multiple Bottom-line Investment Advisory.

The Piramal Prize a $25K Social Entrepreneurship Competition

The Piramal Prize: a $25K Social Entrepreneurship Competition focused on democratizing health care in India

Goal: The competition seeks to encourage and support bold entrepreneurial ideas which can profoundly impact access to higher standards of health for India's rural and marginalized urban communities. The award recognizes high-impact, scalable business models that innovative solutions directly or indirectly addressing India's healthcare crisis.

Entries may include (but are not limited to):

· innovations in service delivery

· technology applications

· health-related products

· mechanisms to address public health necessities (i.e. potable water)

Why enter the competition?

· Contestants will have access to mentorship by prominent business and health leaders and the support of an online community to fully develop their ideas.

· Finalists will spend a weekend in Ahmedabad presenting to a panel of distinguished judges and showcasing their ideas to leading finance firms.

· Winners will receive over $25,000 in seed funding and access to further venture capital support to launch their ideas.

· Winners will be given incubation support at the internationally recognized Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

Victoria Hale on Current TV

In the year 2000 Victoria Hale launched the Institute for OneWorld Health, a nonprofit pharmaceutical company that develops drugs and vaccines for diseases that primarily affect developing countries. Although infectious diseases account for only 10 percent of deaths in developed countries, they cause 60 percent of deaths among the world's poorest people. OneWorld intends to bring drugs to market at costs affordable to poor people and countries.

It has set up a manufacturing and marketing collaborative to begin production of its first drug, which will treat visceral leishmaniasis, a fatal tropical disease transmitted by insect bites that currently afflicts 1.5 million.

Change Looms

Call for Applications - India

Pravah and Ashoka: Innovators for the Public are currently accepting applications for Change Looms, a program that recognizes, encourages and supports the exceptional achievements of young people who are actively promoting social change in society. It provides in-depth capacity building, mentoring from leading social entrepreneurs across India, acknowledgement at a public event, and a grant of Rs. 40,000 for outstanding initiatives.

Last year there were more than 40 youth applicants from around India and 13 were invited to a week-long development centre in Delhi. The five outstanding initiatives recognized last year were:
• Alternative Realitites, an initiative led by Abhishek Bharadwaj to empower homeless citizens in Mumbai
• Chamna Thuptep, an effort by Rebecca Haokip to strengthen the participation of local communities in non-violent conflict resolution in Manipur
• Dhriiti, a Delhi-based group of young people led by Nidhi Arora and Anirban Gupta working to build entrepreneurial skills among youth
• Saher, a community-based organization working for communal harmony in Jogeshwari, Mumbai, led by Masood Akhtar and Rama Shyam
• Save Satpuda, an initiative by Vishal Bansod to include the local community in conserving the tiger and its habitat.

This year up to 15 teams/individuals will be invited to join the Change Looms process.

We are looking for young people between the ages of 17-27 years who have launched on-going social ventures in operation for at least 6 months. These youth initiatives must be independent from existing organizations. Both individuals and teams may apply.
