Sustainable Prosperity: Taking on the Global Challenge; June 12-14, 2008 at the Centre International de Conférences Genève, Geneva, Switzerland
In 2008, Net Impact will bring the model of their hugely successful American conference to a European audience for the first time. The American conference is seen as the leading world forum bringing MBA students, graduates and leaders of tomorrow to exchange ideas, energy and passion with leading professionals from across sectors to discuss how business and business skills can impact social change.
In June, Geneva, Switzerland will play host to the 2008 Net Impact Europe Conference. We have the unique opportunity to welcome Mel Young, founder and President of the Homeless World Cup to offer a keynote address providing a link between these two major events. The Homeless World Cup is an impressive example of how football, passion and creative thinking can impact the sustainable prosperity of individuals from over 60 countries.
This year’s Europe conference will address the theme Sustainable Prosperity: Taking on the Global Challenge. The word prosperity captures the economic and social factors that are expected to contribute to improvements in the welfare of the global population.
The two-day conference will cover a variety of topics within four main tracks that participants will have an opportunity to follow throughout the event. The themes for the 2008 Europe Conference are as follows:
Innovation: What Creates Sustainable Prosperity Within this track we will hear from social entrepreneurs, business leaders and partnerships that are offering innovative ways to tackle the challenge of sustainable prosperity. These individuals and organizations have lead the way in creating social impact by harnessing the power of creative and original thinking to create new means to addressing issues of development, climate change, and sustainable business practices.
Leadership: How Organizations and Individuals Impact Sustainable Prosperity The second track will focus on the role that leadership plays in creating sustainable prosperity. Both organizational and individual leaders have a role to play in creating an environment for change and enhancing the capacity of their organization with respect to sustainability, responsible business practices, and corporate social responsibility. We look forward to hearing from academic experts and practitioners about best practices in leadership.
The Global Challenge: The third track will address the efforts to take sustainability to scale. Our speakers will be challenged to discuss the efforts they have dedicated to sustaining a positive social impact on a global scale. We look forward to hearing from Dalberg-Global Development Advisors, Product Red, and others who will be sharing their opportunities, challenges, and best practices.
Managing Investments and Measuring Results: Our fourth track will offer panel and workshop topics related to how organizations measure, evaluate and account for their impact. This theme also offers an opportunity to discuss the emerging role of finance and the capital market in relationship to how organizations quantify their impact. We are honored to welcome Simon Zadek, Chief Executive of AccountAbility to capture the essence of this theme.

Pairing experienced business people with Kenyan entrepreneurs: Use your business skills to benefit others, and do so in as little as five days.
Skills Venture is a unique business that delivers working breaks of between five days and six months in Kenya to business people from the US, UK and elsewhere has been launched this month.
Skills Venture offers business people with at least five years of experience the chance to support Kenyan entrepreneurs who need mentoring and skills support in areas such as accounting or marketing.
Skills Venture works by pairing each international client with a range of local entrepreneurs who are seen on an individual basis. Visitors provide practical, one-to-one support; there is no classroom teaching or theoretical models. Many Kenyan entrepreneurs simply need help developing their own ideas, and don’t want complex recommendations based on mountains of data.
Business people are matched with several Kenyan entrepreneurs by our team of local business experts, who are on hand 24/7 to provide support.
Joseph Njeru, a Kenyan entrepreneur, started the Mount Kenya Yoghurt Company from his home, selling cups of yoghurt from jerry cans for 5p each. His family has had to leave their home to make space for the production of 4,000 bottles of yoghurt a day. He buys milk from 200 local farmers; their income supports more than 1,000 family members. Yet Joseph struggles to write the business plans expected by the banks to raise capital for further growth. Support from an experienced UK business person can make this possible, directly benefiting up to another 1,000 people.
Skills Venture’s unique and tailored assignments are available from spring 2008. Enquiries are welcome from both individuals and employers on our website at www.skillsventure.com.
Skills Venture has offices in the UK and Kenya. To get in touch please complete the contact form, or contact us directly by email or phone: rob.breare@skillsventure.com UK: +44 (0)20 7871 4439 or +44 (0)7527 051813 Kenya: +254 (0)20 351 1464 or +254 (0)710 350762. Skills Venture is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for assignments in Kenya of between five days and six months from individuals and employers in the USA. Callers from the USA can phone us toll-free on 866-837-6684 (office hours are 0900 - 1800 GMT). We are able to receive payments in dollars through an online credit card facility. April 29-30, 2008, Boston MA
The national conversation about sustainability has reached a fever pitch. While the debate rages about what it means to build a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future, the window for effective action – to address climate change, save entire ecosystems, and reduce global poverty – is quickly passing. What opportunities for action lie before us? What innovative solutions can we identify and deploy – now?
The Ceres Conference 2008: Building Leadership, Creating Solutions comes at a pivotal moment. National elections are looming, and with them the promise of forward-thinking climate and energy policies that might enable the U.S. to regain global leadership. But at the same time that we focus on policy solutions, we must also seize market-based opportunities that integrate sustainability more deeply into corporate decision-making.
The annual Ceres conference is a unique gathering of corporate, environmental, investor, governance, and labor leaders who share a collective vision of sustainability and capital markets functioning side by side. Together, we will identify the immediate approaches and tools for translating talk into action.
Don’t miss it! Show your leadership! Join us in Boston for the Ceres Conference 2008. Register now.
Ceres (pronounced “series”) is a national network of investors, environmental organizations and other public interest groups working with companies and investors to address sustainability challenges such as global climate change.
Mission: Integrating sustainability into capital markets for the health of the planet and its people.

“Supporting Entrepreneurs for Sustainable Development” – the SEED Initiative – is a global network for action on sustainable development partnerships, founded by IUCN, UNEP and UNDP, to deliver concrete progress towards the internationally-agreed, aspirational goals in the UN’s Millennium Declaration and the commitments made at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002.
SEED focuses on locally-driven, entrepreneurial partnerships in developing countries. Its goal is to inspire, promote and build capacity to support the many innovative ways in which diverse groups are working together to improve incomes and strengthen livelihoods; tackle poverty and marginalisation; and manage and conserve natural resources and ecosystems.
Through an annual, global awards scheme SEED reveals a wealth of novel ways of doing business through partnerships and provides international recognition to the most promising enterprises.
The SEED Initiative is launching its SEED Awards 2008. The SEED Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development is an annual international competition, designed to support locally-led, innovative, entrepreneurial partnerships in developing countries, which have the potential to make real improvements in poverty eradication and environmental sustainability.
We welcome innovative ideas from any group in a developing country, which is working in partnership with others to generate environmental and social benefits in an entrepreneurial way.
Deadline 16 March 2008.
The SEED Initiative assists young and promising initiatives in strengthening and scaling up the impact of their activities. This is not a cash award. Instead, a comprehensive package of tailor-made support services, with a value of US$25,000, will be provided to Winners.
The support services respond to the challenges that emerging partnerships face when planning and implementing new ideas, including access to relevant expertise and technical assistance, meeting new partners and building networks, and developing business plans and identifying sources of finance.
The SEED Award recognizes and rewards two levels of winners:
Fifteen finalists who will be publicized and receive limited support through capacity development activities. Finalists will be chosen from developing countries in each of the 4 UN regional groups: Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia. There will be 3 finalists from each region except Asia, from which six finalists will be selected.
Five Award Winners, selected from the pool of fifteen finalists, who will receive the full 'SEED Award' of support services, which will be delivered over a period of 12 months. The nature of the support services will depend on the needs that the Winners identify and will be developed jointly with them.
In addition to receiving support services, Winners in 2007 were celebrated at Awards ceremonies in their home countries and invited to SEED's International Partnerships Forum and Workshop in South Africa. SEED intends to do the same, and more, in 2008.
