Sourcing and Solutions: The Green Event Conference and Expo
Sharing ideas on how to develop, design and produce for an eco-conscious world.
Featured Discussions:
Creating Green
Green is the new.... fill in the blank, currency, trend or wave. How de retailers create green products that will improve their business? What has been successful? How do we keep green consumers interested?
Green Stamps
Confusion bounds regarding how to identify a “real” green product. Our panel discussion will help attendees learn about what is available in the market to support their green claims. It will answer the questions: what is the standard? How are products certified? And what are the differences?
Keynote Speaker:
Andrew Winston, founder of Winston Eco-Strategies—Green to Gold
Founder of Winston Eco-Strategies, Andrew Winston works with leading companies to use environmental thinking to drive growth. He is the co-author of the bestseller Green to Gold, which highlights what works—and what doesn’t—when companies go “green.” Andrew is a globally recognized expert on green business, and has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Time, Newsweek, BusinessWeek, Forbes, The New York Times, The Washington Post, ABC News, CNBS and National Public Radio.
The Green Event will feature an Expo Hall on Gallery 8 of the Millennium Hotel that will include “The GreenWay”, an educational photo and product presentation of green products in action highlighting supply chain initiatives from raw materials to end-use products.

4 June 2008 – 22 November 2008, Wellington, New Zealand; January - June 2009, Brazil
The focus of the global 2008-2010 exhibition is on the solutions and the opportunities for countries, companies and communities to "Kick the Carbon Habit" and de-carbonize their economies and life-styles.
Moving Towards a Balanced Earth: Kick the (Carbon) Habit
The Natural World Museum (NWM), in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), present the 2008–2009 traveling exhibit entitled Moving Towards a Balanced Earth: Kick the Carbon Habit. The exhibit will debuted at the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum in Wellington to commemorate the celebration of UN World Environment Day (WED) on 5 June 2008. For the past 30 years a different country has hosted the WED celebration; this is the first year Wellington, New Zealand has been the official host city. As the host of WED 2008, on the theme of “Kick the Carbon Habit,” New Zealand is one of the first countries to pledge a carbon-neutral future.
Moving Towards a Balanced Earth: Kick the Carbon Habit features the works of 27 artists representing 20 countries. The contemporary art pieces all focus on climate change, with an emphasis on lowering carbon emissions. The thought-provoking exhibition includes photographs, paintings, sculpture, video, multimedia and conceptual installations.
Each year, NWM and UNEP launch their annual flagship exhibit in honor of WED – a principal vehicle through which the United Nations stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political action. Each exhibit focuses on a different environmental issue and utilizes the universal language of art as a catalyst to raise global awareness as it tours the world. After New Zealand, the exhibit is scheduled to tour through Latin America, North America, Asia, and Europe.

“Making Travelers’ PhilanthropySM Work for Development, Business, and Conservation”
The Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development (CESD), a nonprofit research institution based in Washington D.C and at Stanford University, is organizing an international conference on Travelers’ PhilanthropySM. By bringing participants together in Arusha, Tanzania, December 3-5, 2008, CESD aspires to promote and strengthen this emerging form of development assistance generated by travelers and the tourism industry.
CESD’s Travelers’ PhilanthropySM program promotes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) within the travel industry, and encourages individual businesses and their travelers to give “time, talent, and treasure” to support social service and conservation projects in host communities. This is an increasingly important source of development assistance for communities located near tourism destinations.
2008 Travelers’ PhilanthropySM Global Conference
Tanzania, a world leader in ecotourism, and Arusha as the gateway to Mt. Kilimanjaro and the northern safari circuit including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, provide an ideal venue for this conference. The Tanzania conference builds upon the initial international Travelers’ PhilanthropySM conference held at Stanford University in the USA in 2004.
The three-day conference in Arusha will bring together 200-300 practitioners from socially responsible tourism businesses, experts in the field of sustainable tourism and philanthropy, community based organizations and global and regional NGOs doing development work, the United Nations and other development agencies, philanthropic foundations, government, and the media. A growing number of leading tourism businesses, organizations, and international agencies are co-sponsoring this important conference.
The Travelers’ PhilanthropySM Conference 2008 will provide a venue for collective learning and exchange among the group of global participants. It will facilitate discussion of the tools and capacity needed for effectively running and evaluating community projects. A goal is to move Travelers’ PhilanthropySM from a mere set of ideals to applied best practices.
More generally, the conference will build media and public interest in socially responsible travel. The conference will include presentations on some of the leading Travelers’ PhilanthropySM initiatives around the world. It will also offer a range of optional safaris before and after the event, hosted by leading East Africa tour operators that include visits to community and conservation projects.

April 29-30, 2008, Boston MA
The national conversation about sustainability has reached a fever pitch. While the debate rages about what it means to build a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future, the window for effective action – to address climate change, save entire ecosystems, and reduce global poverty – is quickly passing. What opportunities for action lie before us? What innovative solutions can we identify and deploy – now?
The Ceres Conference 2008: Building Leadership, Creating Solutions comes at a pivotal moment. National elections are looming, and with them the promise of forward-thinking climate and energy policies that might enable the U.S. to regain global leadership. But at the same time that we focus on policy solutions, we must also seize market-based opportunities that integrate sustainability more deeply into corporate decision-making.
The annual Ceres conference is a unique gathering of corporate, environmental, investor, governance, and labor leaders who share a collective vision of sustainability and capital markets functioning side by side. Together, we will identify the immediate approaches and tools for translating talk into action.
Don’t miss it! Show your leadership! Join us in Boston for the Ceres Conference 2008. Register now.
Ceres (pronounced “series”) is a national network of investors, environmental organizations and other public interest groups working with companies and investors to address sustainability challenges such as global climate change.
Mission: Integrating sustainability into capital markets for the health of the planet and its people.

Pop!Tech 2008 Conference: Scarcity and Abundance
For the twelfth year, the Pop!Tech Conference will again convene a network of 600 remarkable thinkers, doers, leaders and global change agents in science, technology, social innovation, business, environmentalism, globalization, media, education, and many other fields for a four-day exploration of ideas shaping the future.
This year, we will pay particular attention to the 21st century dynamics between systems based on scarcity and those based on abundance, in areas ranging from digital social networks to environmentalism, from biology to business, from peacemaking to politics. We’ll chart the core scarcities that humanity will face in this century, and how a wealth of new innovations, new bottom-up approaches to collaboration, and new insights into collective wisdom might hold the key to addressing them.
As always, there will be incredible performances, jaw-dropping technology demonstrations, spirited discussions, formal debates and surprises throughout. We will leave Camden with an inspired sense of our challenges, our potential, and the dynamics of positive change.
We invite you to see what others say about the Pop!Tech experience, and to register right away if you are interested.

£1 million prize fund - 29 February deadline for UK-based entries.
We’re facing one of the biggest challenges of our generation - climate change. At NESTA, we believe that encouraging people to work together will help find new ways - better ways - to tackle BIG problems, like reducing CO 2 emissions. That’s why we’ve developed a unique and exciting competition – with a £1 million prize fund - the Big Green Challenge from NESTA.
Our latest survey shows that eight of ten people think they’ve had an idea that would have a positive impact on people’s lives, but few people follow up on their idea beyond that initial moment of inspired thinking.
The Big Green Challenge is all about unleashing new ideas for reducing carbon emissions in communities. If you’ve already got an idea at the back of your mind, sharing it with other people in your group or community could be the first step to making it a reality.
You probably have some questions about entering the Challenge, which we have tried to answer in the FAQs. Please also make sure you think about the criteria and read the application instructions before you submit your application. You have until 29 February 2008 to apply. We’re looking forward to seeing some really exciting ideas coming in!
If you have any questions about the Challenge that you can’t find answers to on this website, please contact us.
