2004 Skoll World Forum

The first annual Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship took place from March 29 to 31, 2004 at the Said Business School, Oxford University, U.K. The Forum brought together some of the most creative agents of social change who have invented new models that result in sustainable solutions to social problems.

Interview: Otiz F Angel - NewBrid Music

Otiz F Angel: My name is Otiz F Angel and I'm a record producer and DJ. I'm with NewBrid Music. NewBrid Music is an alternative music industry; it's working with social entrepreneurs and bringing music to the third world, training young kids in the third world how to actually create house music and rave music and actually trying to create a third world dance scene.

Social Edge: How did this get started and how did you get interested in this area?

OFA: Basically we just started off with just commercial intent but now we've grown to an area where we feel that we can actually put something back into the community. So first we were going down the more philanthropist…yeah, we was going down the charity avenue, but a friend of ours in San Francisco kind of showed us a different way of doing things. So gradually what we've learned how to do is try and create a system where, rather than just give away money, we can put money into a project and get these young children to actually start learning how to create modern music and, through our medium and our record label, sell it at Western prices. Then, what we encourage the young kids to then do is take 20%, put it into their community and the rest of the money goes as payment for them to teach other kids how to use the equipment and make more music--which then comes back to our record label again in one big cycle.

Social Edge: What is it about this conference that have been some of the highlights for you? What have you gotten out of it and what would you bring home?

OFA: To be honest, we've got a really strong network--a real kind of an education of exactly what people are doing out there and what can be achieved with it. I think by coming to this it actually made us see that we're on the right tip--we're going the right way. And, most of all, that we can actually bring this kind of environment more into a younger and more club-style audience. You know? So that's what we're going to be doing.
