Title:
Hybrid and For-Profit Business Models

Date: March 27, 2008

Description: Non-profit social entrepreneurs often struggle to scale up their innovations without adequate access to the growth capital, distribution systems and infrastructure readily available to conventional businesses. Rather than accepting these limitations, many are increasingly pursuing hybrid models that draw from the best of both worlds, incorporating traditional business structures and strategies to achieve a social bottom line. This session will look at the challenges and opportunities that accompany these new business models, including an overview of different approaches and in-depth discussion with social entrepreneurs at the forefront of this movement.

Panel:
  • Tralance O. Addy, Ph.D., President and CEO, WaterHealth International
  • David Brancaccio, Host and Senior Editor of NOW, PBS
  • Priya Haji, CEO and Co-founder, World of Good, Inc.
  • Liza Kimbo, Director, LiveWell Kenya Foundation
  • Sebastien Marot, International Coordinator, Friends-International
  • Tina Seelig, Executive Director, Stanford Technology Ventures Program, Stanford University

Though just 70 miles away I can't be there, more importantly neither can our founder who's blocked from entering the UK as a suspected economic migrant.

What I hope however, is that some will take a look at his 1996 paper which describes a for-profit approach to eliminate poverty and its relationship to the information age and terrorism, his leveraging a microcredit bank in Russia, and his recent strategy paper on a microeconomic Marshall Plan.

In the last 4 years, I've tackled many of these issues. Migrating a business to a profit for purpose social enterprise, starting the first social business software development business in the UK and dealing with the corporate world as a product supplier.

He and I consider ourselves social entrepreneurs at the forefront of this movement.

It's all described here on http://www,p-ced.com

I was there last year, but can't swing annual trips to SWF. Envirofit's CEO, Ron Bills will be there. The model seems to be working pretty well most days.

I did have a chance to chat with Tina Seelig at NCIAA conference last week about this panel. Looks like a great group and topic. I hope the panel focuses more on busines models than legal req'ts (hybrids are too important to leave to lawyers- they are key part of start up strategy). I recently posted some ideas on a high level "sort" on business models for environmental and public health enterprises. Please provide input here or at www.bopreneur.blogspot.com. Or ask Tina!
